STOUR SPACE DESIGNERS MARKET

WOWZERS.....what a day... what a fabulous new, up-and-coming market in a beautiful warehouse. I tried out some new black and white lighting and teardrop designs on some newly sourced t-shirts and they went down a treat. I shall take some photos soon and place them on etsy, folksy etc.

A busy day on my stall. I managed to get a rather good spot at the front and as the first time I have ever done a market on my own I think I did pretty well. im so happy...

I can wait for my next market at the 'backyard market' in Brick Lance on Sunday 7th March (wow is it march  already!!!)

*****remember, If you have visited my stall and I didn't have the size you wanted. email me  (emilythepemily@hotmail.com) and I can print you one up and send it to you...

one day I will get a website up and running and I can have direct orders... a few more markets will pay for that though.

ALEXANDER McQUEEN DEAD TODAY

Just got home and found this all over the news.

As much as this is really tragic and awful thing to have happened, it makes me so angry that he is quoted for being a 'delightful person, he wasn't snobby' , and also 'helping young designers, teaching them his trade'
I beg to differ.

ALEXANDER McQUEEN

If you remember my post way back in May last year

well I saw Mr McQueen at terminal 5 (where I work)

He came through the metal detector i was on.

'I did an internship with your company in may' I said

He just looked at me.

' I worked on the menswear bit' I said, hoping for some sort of acknowledgement.

'oh....right' he said... walking off

what a snobby knob! If i was him I'd acknowledge his intern ...maybe ask a question or even say 'thank you' or something. What a KNOB...

advice for anyone about to do an internship for Alexander Mcqueen.... DON'T DO IT

The above is his AW09/10 collection....the stupid A5 finger painting I was asked to create...and the first drawing I was ever asked to draw at Mcqueens. Ripping off someone elses work... If the guy who drew the 'duck tattoo' is out there... yes this does look like yours... yes
I did have to copy it, but change it into an eagle.

My therapy soon after my intern was doodling these drawings below in my sketchbook. The skull one is a skulls head made from drawings of rips which made its eyes and the mouth. drawn 23/05/09

take a look at his website for more unimaginative- ripped off rubbish that has no thought or concept to...

'this season we are going to rip off creative people.... Andy Warhol, Picasso, Cy Twombly...were going to rip off their artistic style and the way they dress'

and just think about the poor interns who worked day and night with no creative input into what they were working on...just unpaid monkeys.

the average price for one of these shirts £300
the average intern spends 3months at McQueens working 13hours a day.

remember that when you buy designer.

NOV and DEC

Out of the blue... when I was low.... a good friend of mine emailed asking if i wanted to do the 'All I Want for Xmas ' market at the Truman Brewery

yes yes yes i said, and promptly brought some screens and ink from Screen Colour Systems. I ordered my screens and ink and they exposed my images and I collected them...all within a week. really good service.

I brought some men and women t shirts, sweatshirts, baby grows and children's t shirts then printed printed printed printed to my hearts content!!

I enjoyed it So much.. I could wait to sell my stuff to real people. and if this goes well, i thought, I'll set up my business for sure....

And you know what... it was a bloody success. it made me so please to sell about half of my stock in 2 days. i was so proud....

the journey has begun

ITS BEEN A WHILE, LET ME FILL YOU IN

MAY
I completed my Graduate Certificate in digital surface design, the course and MA were discontinued shortly afterwards so no Graduate diploma. It really was the best thing I've ever done and I cannot believe the government scrapped them. They dilute my degree more and more every day by making degrees accessible to everyone in the country, then when want to do the next thing up from a degree, funding it myself, they scrap it. What ever next?

With a new lease of life I gave my best mate and I a plan to have a market stall by xmas 2009 and get our business up and running my 2010. An reasonable ammount of time considering we where both working full time.

JUNE
My best friend had helped her flatmate print my designs onto some t-shirts, ready to sell
at Glastonbury festival.

I only found out because the flatmate had put photographs up on facebook of her at Glastonbury.

I felt sick when I saw the photographs. Something that I enjoyed doing and worked so hard to create was finally paying off, I had amazing feedback at my show I had even sold a few things. For once I felt like my own abilities could really get me somewhere, and that my ideas were actally quite good and on trend.

All of that was destroyed. My work had been ripped off by a 'friend'. she was selling them to mass audiences before I even had a chance. I was mortified.

The annoying thing about it is I gave the 'friend' loads of advice about screen printing.

Meanwhile, me and my boyfriend had decided to get married asap and sept 19th was the first availability.

I bit my tongue and got on with my life. The day before my wedding my friend just had to let me know that her flatmate and her were going to set up a stall in Brick lane as a 'pop up shop'...

oh, wonderful I thought. no invite- not that i would have wanted to join them as my designs would have been along side copys of my designs- but it was our idea, our target. and she'd totally just jumped on the bandwagon, with no thought to who she was with, or what it meant to others.

I confronted both of them -

The flatmate replying 'we came up with these designs as a group, sorry if you think they look like your designs. we're not even going to use the designs any more'

The friend replying 'Its nothing to do with me its between you and her (the flatmate) , you took too long anyway'

I don't speak to either of them any more. I've learned a lot from this.

I later found out that they did use my designs in both their 'Brick Lane stall' and their 'Bethnal Green jumble sale'

I was so shocked/hurt/surprised it knocked me for six... if my 'friends' could use my designs and feel no remorse what would everyone else do with them???

its taken me until very recently to prperly get over it. After many talks with friends and family 1. to make sure I wasn't going mad 2. to decide what to do next, I now feel I can carry on and really make a go of this, and make it work, and best of all leave my job.

Oh before I forget..... please judge for yourself. (my designs are on the right) please consider that i saw some of the 'flatmates' designs before the incidences took place where moustaches, bold prints and line drawings did not feature on ANY of them.

AUGUST
I moved from a studio in Richmond to a 2 bed house in Hounslow. And guess where my new studio is.... thats right, the second bedroom. very exciting.

SEPTEMBER

I got married.... in Richmond registry office. - a bit of woo har over having 'God Gave Rock n Roll To You' by Kiss because it has a religious connotation to it???? but they allowed it. so we has that playing as I walked down the isle and 'Baby I Love You' by the Ramones as we left...

it was a fun day and all the photographs where bloody marvellous.... taken buy some close friends of mine

JANUARY- Photography with Ma and Pa

I realised very quickly I needed good quality photographs of every thing for EVERYTHING.
websites, emails, business cards etc etc
so my wonderful photographer parents got summoned to London from the snowy Midlands for a day of photographing.....which I'm sure they both mum and dad thoroughly enjoyed
result tomorrow...
